Hey Kid!

Lilacs have become the remembrance flower for me, I have decided. This morning, in the cool air of dawn, I walked around my yard and enjoyed each and every lilac bush that is in bloom. In tears I stood by the four from my friend Rose. She and her husband Frank were a gift to me from God, and I am ever grateful. We moved in next door to them with one little one and one on the way. They gave me pointers on gardening and keeping the weeds out of my yard - mostly so they would not end up growing in their perfectly manicured lawn. In retrospect, I should have followed their advice more often, they were always right. I can still see Frank, a WWII prisoner of war survivor, leaning over the fence, "You know, you ought to weed your garden. Stuff is still alive under those weeds." I had given up on it after yet another hail storm, but following his admonishment I weeded the garden and had a great harvest. Rose loved buying stuff at the thrift store, then showing it to me with pride "you see this kid? Now that oughta be worth something some day!!" or "why don't you plant your garden in rows? It grows so much better." On one of my last visits to Rose when she was still well we were saying good bye on the sidewalk; looking down she saw the lilac bush was sending up suckers in the cracks and crannies. She told me to pull them up and plant them. I did. Today, they are blooming. That Nebraska farm girl was my friend, a treasure, a woman of faith who saw God heal her once of cancer. The lilacs, our mutual gift.

Little House - The Rockie Season

Homer is a faithful Rockies fan. You can imagine his disappointment when we heard the game would not be on tv. Ah, like the old days we pulled out the radio, found 850KOA on the dial and cranked it up. Each beautiful Rockie run was punctuated with a celebratory clap. Marge worked on her afghan while we waited for them to win. Alas, a painful ending, we followed every pitch, every call, and yet we fell to Philly. Now, about those Broncos...
